Luz Rivas, Assemblywoman of California State Assembly, was born in Los Angeles to an immigrant family and grew up in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. She attended LA Unified schools before earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT and a master’s of education from Harvard.Luz has built her career at the intersection of engineering, education and public service. She worked as an electrical design engineer at Motorola before founding DIY Girls, a nonprofit that provides enrichment programs focused on encouraging young girls to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. In 2016, she was appointed by Mayor Eric Garcetti to the Los Angeles Board of Public Works. Luz was elected and sworn in to the California State Assembly in June of 2018. She is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources. She is also the Chair of the Select Committee on the Non-profit Sector, and serves on the Select Committee on Latina Inequalities and Select Committee on Education. It is an honor for her to represent the community she grew up in.

Corey Newhouse, Founder and Principal at Public Profit, got her start as a teacher at Summerbridge Cincinnati in the early 1990s, and has been involved in educational equity and social justice movements ever since. She founded Public Profit to build a team that would seamlessly blend social science research methods, organizational change strategy, and a deep commitment to supporting changemakers. Corey’s formal training is in program evaluation, education policy, and statistical analysis. Prior to launching Public Profit in 2007, Corey was a Senior Policy Associate with Children Now, supporting the policy team with data and evaluation, and as an Associate with HTA, a strategy and fundraising consulting firm. Corey earned her MPP at UC Berkeley and her BA at Columbia College.

Scott Burg, Senior Research Principal at Rockman et al, has a formal background in adult education, instructional systems design, health services and qualitative research. While at Rockman, Scott has developed a robust and diverse client practice including science and art museums, public media, performing and visual arts organizations, and patient care and advocacy groups. Scott’s projects have ranged from studying the impact of jazz education in school classrooms to assessing efforts to support cancer patients impacted by natural disasters. Independently, Scott has also conducted case studies on the impact of eye care in developing countries including India, Bangladesh, Guatemala, and Peru. Scott earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature from the University of Illinois, and a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Maryland.

The Research Group at Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley, delivers a full spectrum of services to provide evidence and insights that foster high-quality, innovative learning experiences in science and mathematics that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally relevant. They provide independent research services. In addition, we partner on national initiatives that support the development and implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities for both formal and informal education needs.
