October 2011

From the Director...

Hi everyone,

Fall is an exciting time for Girls Raised In Tennessee Science. There are many programs and opportunities for girls of all ages in October and November. You can meet Marie Curie, learn about how popular media represents girls and attend the MTSU EYH on October 22! Don't forget that the GRITS Collaborative Project is hosting its first annual conference on November 5. Check out the details below for all of these programs.

If you do have a program that supports girls in STEM education and careers, do send me that infromation. We will be glad to post content as submitted and if space is available, in the GRITS Newsletter. I hope to see you at one or more of the events mentioned above. Thank you for supporting Girls Raised In Tennessee Science!

History speaks on October 5th when Marie Curie comes alive to tell her story on the 100th anniversary of her receiving the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Curie was the first woman to win a Noble Prize and the first person to win in two different categories, Physics (1903) and Chemistry (1911). Born Marie Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland in 1867, to educators and raised by her physics teacher father after her mother died when she was 11, she excelled in math and the sciences and went on to study a new phenomenon, radioactivity. Her lifetime of accomplishments has yet to be surpassed by any scientist: male or female, dead or alive.

The MTSU EYH will hold its 15th Annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference on Saturday, October 22, 2011.  The MTSU EYH offers tracks for both middle school and high school girls.  The keynote speaker is Jennifer Ilsley, an MTSU senior who will graduate with her degree in mathematical sciences in December 2011.  She came to the MTSU EYH as a fifth grade student.  As a college student, Jennifer has presented EYH workshops on polymer science and on math.  She has also served as as EYH group leader.  Find out more about the MTSU EYH by sending an email to eyh@mtsu.edu or by going to the MTSU EYH homepage, www.mtsu.edu/eyh.

Parents, guardians, teachers and other adults who support girls in STEM can attend a GRITS Collaborative Project Forum at the MTSU EYH conference. Our Forum will focus on Best Practices in STEM: How to Help Your Daughter Succeed in STEM.  Register for the MTSU Forum at http://www.ngcproject.org/events/events.cfm?eventid=215

Miss Representation
Join us October 24 at the Economic Summit on Women for the session from 2:30-4:15 pm about the documentary film "Miss Representation" that will inspire women and girls to find their own voice and power. American teens talk about the mixed messages they are getting and their struggle to find the right path. There will be discussion about the issue of why women and girls are often misrepresented in the media and what can be done to change this. Young girls who are students may attend this session only at no cost, but must contact Yvonne Wood at ycwood@aol.com to sign up for the session.
