From the Director... |
It is already March.
Snow flurries are predicted for tomorrow and my crocuses are
trying to poke through the cold earth. Many students and
their families are thinking about graduation which brings to mind a
favorite quote of mine. "A diploma will take you further than a
car." I'd like to make one change to this quote and say that
"A diploma in a STEM field will take you further than a
car." The Tennessee Economic Council for Women states
that women must be encouraged to move into the higher paying work,
thus into the STEM fields, which are the jobs of the future in
Tennessee and across our nation. You can find out more about
the Economic Council for Women at http://www.state.tn.us/sos/ecw/index.htm. A diploma
in STEM will certainly provide a stronger economic future for
women in Tennessee. The mission of the GRITS
Collaborative Project is to encourage Tennessee girls
to earn that diploma in STEM which in turn will provide them
with the "car" to a better future.

Undergraduate Opportunity!
|
The aim of this Research Experience for
Undergrads (REU) program is to provide research experiences for
undergraduate students majoring in the sciences with an introduction to
cutting edge research in the broad area of "Sensing and Signaling". The
team of REU investigators represents a multidisciplinary ensemble of
Cell Biologists, Geneticists, Biochemists, and Biophysicists who are
taking modern approaches to the analysis of how signals are perceived
and transduced in myriad biological systems. This
opportunity is available to Freshman, Sophomore and Junior undergraduate
science majors. REU Fellowships will be awarded to qualified students
on a competitive basis. Each Fellowship will include a $3,200 stipend as
well as an allowance for cost of living, travel, and research supplies.
To be considered, applicants should complete the online application
form available at the link below, and should arrange to have two letters
of recommendation and a college transcript sent to:
The University of Tennessee BCMB
Department Dr. Dan Roberts, Professor M407 Walters Life Sciences Knoxville,
TN 37996-0840

Patten Science 102 Sustainability and
Chemistry: Tomorrow's Challenge for Today's Students Sustainability
has been defined as the ability of humanity "to ensure that it meets
the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs." What challenges does
sustainability pose for the current and future state of science,
particularly chemistry? What challenges do sustainability and chemistry
pose for students who are in college now and may want to continue for
graduate work or look for a job in industry? What challenges do
sustainability and chemistry pose for everyone? This talk will highlight
some of those challenges as well as the opportunities that
sustainability and chemistry together offer to individuals beginning
their careers as scientists and to the general public. |
So
You Want To Be A Dentist!
|
By: Amanda Cowart
Once you enter
college aspiring to become a dentist, don't forget your ultimate goal to
enter Dental School! As a sophomore pre-Dental student, there are many
things that I have to do to prepare myself for entrance into
a dental school. First, of course, I have to keep my grades as high
as possible in my pre-dentistry curriculum. The competitive cumulative
GPA and science GPA for Dental school is a 3.5. It is also very
important to have many hours shadowing and observing dentists as
possible. Many campus clubs offer tours of Dental Schools and bring in
speakers, such as D.D.S., the pre-dentistry and pre-dental hygiene club
at MTSU. I have visited a dental school, and talked to numerous
dentists, oral surgeons, orthodontists, etc. Being involved on campus is
very important and I stay involved through my sorority Zeta Tau Alpha! I
also volunteer with the MTSU EYH conference. All that is left is
to keep working hard and prepare for the Dental Admissions Test (DAT).
