From the Director... |
I want to thank everyone for your many emails expressing concern
about our well-being after news of our May floods traveled across the
country. As far as I know, members of the GRITS Collaborative are
well. Personally, I do not want to see any more H2O falling from the
sky, even though we are already wishing for rain because a long hot
summer is coming. Now for
the good news! We want to congratulate all of the WISE women, from
MTSU and other schools, who are moving forward in their STEM
careers. Alyse Hawk, 2009-2010 WISE president, has been accepted
into the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program at Vanderbilt
University. She received her degrees (yes, I did say DEGREES) in
Psychology and Spanish with a minor in neuroscience, from MTSU this past
May. Raquel Ingram has been accepted in the summer REU (Research
Experience for Undergraduates) program of the University of Oregon,
quite a trip from Murfreesboro TN! We will hear more about her
research experiences in the fall. Readers of the GRITS
Collaborative newsletter already know Cacy (DeSheles) Victory, who
served as the assistant director of GRITS until last December. She
also graduated this past May with a B. S. in biology and is spending
her summer as an intern at the Nashville Zoo, working with primates. I
know that I am missing many other WISE women who are making a difference
in their chosen STEM fields. But I am confident that I can speak
for them and thank their family and mentors for supporting them on their
journey to becoming STEM professionals. I know, because I would
not be the scientist that I am today without the support and
encouragement of my many mentors. Please share your stories about
WISE women with the GRITS Collaborative and let's leverage our
collective knowledge to continue to support Girls Raised In Tennessee
Science.

Expanding Your Horizons in
Tennessee |
| We
are delighted to share this news with our GRITS Collaborative members
especially since there are two strong EYH conferences now in
Tennessee. The Expanding Your Horizons Network was named
recipient of the prestigious 2010 National Science Board (NSB) Public
Service Award. We are so very proud to be a part of this
organization which plays such an important role in promoting gender
equity for girls in STEM. Middle Tennessee State University will
hold its 14th EYH on September 25, 2010. We have typically held
our EYH in October however the MTSU football had a good season last
year, and now the Saturdays in October are filled with football.
The University of Memphis will be hosting its 3rd EYH, also on September
25. Feel free to contact Deborah Hochstein of the
University of Memphis EYH or myself for Tennessee EYH information. More
information can be found about about the EYH network and the NSB Public
Service Award on the EYH Network: homepage,

WISTEM Center Kick-Off | | We are serious about women in STEM in Tennessee.
On May 10, the Kick-Off networking reception and Advisory
Board meeting was held for the Women In STEM (WISTEM) Center on the
MTSU campus. We shared many ideas about how we can attract,
recruit, retain and graduate women in STEM in
Tennessee. Watch this newsletter for more about the WISTEM
Center. Please do share your ideas and suggestions about how we
can serve girls and women in STEM in Tennessee. Please visit the WISTEM
Center's homepage at www.mtsu.edu/wistem |
