Hi Everyone,
Happy
2011! December was a busy month for GRITS. We
shared information about the GRITS Collaborative Project and our
STEM activities for girls and their parents and teachers with
the Chattanooga Local Section of the American Chemical
Society, with science teachers from across Tennessee at the
Nashville Regional Conference of the NSTA (National Science
Teachers Association), and in a special symposium titled "Broadening
Participation of Underrepresented Groups in the Chemical Sciences" at
the SWRM (southwest regional meeting) and SERMACS (southeastern regional
meeting) of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans. We
closed 2010 with an invited talk, "Tennessee Women at the Forefront: Challenges and Solutions in STEM Education and Careers, at
the 2010 International Chemical Conference of Pacific Basic Societies
on December 17. The international audience was delighted to hear
about the strong collaborations being formed across Tennessee and
across the U.S. through the National Girls Collaborative
Project. So make it a New Year's resolution to share your
knowledge about NGCP and about the work that we are doing in Tennessee
through GRITS CP. If you want NGCP and GRITS literature to
share, just let me know and a package will be in the mail to
you!
We know that communication AND collaboration are
essential
for Girls Raised In Tennessee Science. Please send me in advance,
information about your events and programs for Girls Raised In
Tennessee Science. We will be glad to share your news in the GRITS
CP newsletter.

| Spring 2011 Educational Television Program Schedule | |
The
Satellite and Webcasting Center of Middle Tennessee State University
offers live enrichment programs for students and professional
development workshops for educators throughout the academic
year. On February 3, the MTSU Women In STEM (WISTEM)
Center and the MTSU Department of Elementary and Special
Education will present "What is a STEM Educator? for
teachers and guidance counselors. This program will be broadcast
live at from 3:30 to 4:30 PM CST on Thursday, February 3, 2011.
Educators are invited to attend this program in person. If
interested, contact Dr. Jeremy Winters at jwinters@mtsu.edu.
The student enrichment program offered by WISTEM is called "WISE Women Engineer the Future."
A panel of women engineers from middle Tennessee will discuss how
they navigated their career path to a degree and a
fulfilling career in engineering. They will also
describe what attracted them to a career in engineering
and why they find their career so satisfying. The
panelists will answer questions from the live and remote audience. For further information about the student enrichment program, contact
Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross at jiriarte@mtsu.edu.
