From the Director...

Hi everyone;

As promised, here is another special edition of the GRITS CP Newsletter with STEM resources and a STEM calendar.

Please do send me information about coming events which support girls in STEM education and careers.  Include name of program, collaborative partners, location, date, time, and contact person for your event.   We will be glad to share program information through our newsletter and through our Program Directory!  A special edition of our newsletter will be "published" when we have a full calendar of STEM events for Girls Raised In Tennessee Science.  Let's build a stronger STEM collaboration across Tennessee by sharing information about STEM opportunities for girls!  Thank you for your support!

STEM Events and Resources

1. The Expanding Your Horizons - West Tennessee branch is actively working with community partners to hold its fourth annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference, scheduled for Saturday, September 24, 2011. Hosted by the University of Memphis, preparations are being made to accommodate up to 160 girls in grades 6 to 9 where they will be able to explore career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, (STEM). Each girl selects four different workshops out of a possible sixteen, each emphasizing a different career. The girls have an opportunity to meet these working professionals while performing a hands-on activity related to that field. The premise is that interest in a particular career path will lead a girl down a productive educational path. As working professionals, we all know that motivation, education and mentoring are critical to a woman's success in any career.  Contact Shelia Moses for information about the West TN EYH at srmoses@memphis.edu

2. Tennessee Electronic Library Available.  The Tennessee Electronic Library now includes World Book, free for everyone in Tennessee! World Book includes three age levels, a Spanish-language option, and differentiated learning with World Book Discover. Go to www.tntel.info and click on World Book to see it all. Questions? Contact TEL Coordinator Wendy Cornelisen at 615-532-4627 or tel.tsla@tn.gov.

3. STEM FAB Fridays for 4th-12th GradersVisit the Millard Oakley STEM Center and play with science - use microscopes, learn about the physics of bumper cars, experience a variety of fun stations and activities. Great opportunity to get ideas and resources for the Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Free. Reservations Required. Selected Fridays from 6-9pm; parent/guardian must accompany child/children. 2011-2012 Schedule: http://www.tntech.edu/stem/stem-fab-fridays/

4. Southern Automotive Women's Forum Annual Conference (SAWF): August 25 to August 26 in Nashville.

SAWF promotes education and scholarships in addition to personal and professional advancement of women in the automotive industry who are located in the Southern Region of the United States. Its members serve as strong role models, helping to encourage young women from grade school on up to stay in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with the hope that they will apply those skills to the automotive industry.  For information about SAWF and the annual conference go to: https://sawf.memberclicks.net/

5. Girls' Science Night. If you are in the 4th - 8th grade you are invited to a girls' night of science-filled fun at Walters State Community College on August 26th from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.  You will meet local woman scientists and participate in several hands-on labs led by WSCC faculty and the WSCC Science Club students. The labs will include learning how to use a microscope to look at cool specimens (including yourself!), exploring genetics, and the opportunity to dissect an eyeball while learning about the senses. This free event is made possible by a grant obtained through the National Girls Collaborative Project and the GRITS Collaborative Project. Space is limited to the first 60 girls. Contact Dr. Lisa Eccles at Lisa.Eccles@ws.edu for additional information.
