August 2011

From the Director...

Hi everyone;

I hope that you are having a great summer.  The GRITS Collaborative Project Leadership Team and Champions Board have been meeting on and off throughout the summer, making plans for our first Annual Conference. Save these dates - November 4 and 5.  Watch this newsletter for details!

Please do send me information about coming events which support girls in STEM education and careers.  Include name of program, collaborative partners, location, date, time, and contact person for your event.   We will be glad to share program information through our newsletter and through our Program Directory!  The deadline for our next "save the date" edition of the GRITS CP  newsletter will be August 15.  If you have Program Directory questions, please give me a call.  Let's build a stronger STEM collaboration across Tennessee!  Thank you for your support!

Judith

Reminder: Save the Date for the GRITS CP Mini-Grant Forum

Girls Raised In Tennessee Science (GRITS) Collaborative Project Mini-Grants support new collaborative projects to expose girls (and boys) to STEM activities and related careers.

Want to apply for a Mini-Grant but don't know where to start?  GRITS Leadership Team and Champions Board members will host a workshop to walk you through the process, including helping you register in the NGCP Program Directory, find collaborative partners, and develop your application.  The GRITS Mini-Grant Forum will be held on the campus of Belmont University in Inman Hall, Room 110 on Saturday, August 6th from 10 am until noon.

Please RSVP to http://www.ngcproject.org/events/events.cfm?eventid=207 Wednesday, August 3 if you plan to attend.

Deborah Hochstein is a founding member of the GRITS Collaborative Project and is recognized as an exceptional mentor for young women in STEM, particularly in the field of  engineering.  She is an Associate Professor of Engineering Technology and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Administration in the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Georgian Court University and Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Akron. Prior to entering academia she worked in a technical capacity for General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut and Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton, Ohio. She has been teaching courses in the engineering technology program at the University of Memphis since 1991 and continues to work on outreach projects aimed at middle school and high school students that promote engineering as a career path. She was actively involved in the first EYH Conference held in West Tennessee in 2008 and has continued to support that event now in its 4th year. In 2010 she was named to the Champions Board for the GRITS Collaborative Project.  We are delighted that Deborah is a GRITS Collaborative Project Champion!

We hope to see you at the GRITS CP Mini-Grant Forum on August 6.  Thank you for supporting Girls Raised In Tennessee Science!
