What is a mini-grant? Incentive
money (up to $1000) for girl-serving organizations to collaboratively
provide STEM programming. Mini-grants are not
designed to supplement ongoing projects, but to enhance access,
services, and to build collaboration between programs and resources. ·At
least two programs each from a different organization must collaborate
on the mini-grant project. ·All programs collaborating on the
mini-grant must be registered in the Program Directory. ·Projects
proposed must include content from the Research Based Strategies in
informal learning or evaluation and assessment.
The following webcast has been archived

Florida Girls Collaborative Project
January Forum Update |
|
We hear you! Many small organizations have let us know they
would like to get involved in Florida Girls Collaborative Project
activities, but budgets are tight and travel time is limited. In
January, we took the show on the road and shared resources with
organizations in and around the Jacksonville area.
Participants enjoyed speed networking and were introduced
to the goals of National Girl Collaborative Project, as well as the
tools and resources available through NGCP. They learned about
mini-grants from start to finish-while viewing sample
applications so they could see the types of questions asked and
what has successfully been funded in the past. A workshop
on collaborations and partnerships helped participants understand
the different levels of partnering and when to use which one. They
also learned successful techniques to get partners to the place where
the relationship is mutually beneficial and sharing risks and
rewards. Next, they learned that evaluation doesn't have to
be scary!! Key topics included: why qualitative and quantitative
analysis is important, conducting focus groups, and creating
surveys. Lastly, we did a few low-tech hands on activities from
Techbridge, Design Squad (PBS), and Engineer Your Life so that they
would have some hands on activities they could take back to the
classroom or organization right away. The built duct tape and newspaper
tables, disassembled a toy car, played with snap circuits in small
groups.
The following organizations participated:Communities In Schools of
Bradford County, Florida Inc., Girls Inc of Jacksonville, John E. Ford
Montersorri School, Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, Florida State
College at Jacksonville / Tri-IT Grant Program Florida State College at
Jacksonville Women's Center MDCPS, Miami Lakes Educational
Center, Upward Bound/University of Central Florida, Empowerment
Resources, Inc., University of Central Florida, and Girls Get IT.
Special thanks to Girls Inc of Jacksonville for providing our
meeting site for the day!
If you would like to host an Florida Girls Collaborative Project
activity in an area outside of Central Florida, please contact Amy
Foster, Collaborative Lead, at afoster@gswcf.org

New
Engineering Video released!
This is Engineering is a 4 ˝ minute video for
middle school students and adults of all ages incorporating material
from Changing the Conversation: Messages for Improving Public
Understanding of Engineering (National Academy of Engineering, NAS 2008)
and targeting women in engineering.
This WEB SITE
has a This is Engineering section with resources for
engineering and other STEM disciplines: annotated lists of books, TV and
Radio Programs, Movies, Websites, Videos, Power Point Presentations,
Experiments and Games.
A Must
Read!
The first
National Conference on Science and Technology in Out-of-School Time was
held in September 2008. A Watershed Moment contains the key findings
of the conference. From Dr. Eric Jolly's inspiring keynote address, to
the informal breakout sessions, to the culminating panel of experts that
surfaced the big ideas, the conference reinforced the Noyce
Foundation's conviction that out-of-school science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) experiences can be the spark that leads to a
life-long passion for discovery and innovation.
SciGirls
Television Series Premiers Nationwide SciGirls
a new PBS KIDS
GO! series targeting tween girls, showcases bright, curious real girls
putting science and engineering to work, as they answer real-life
questions and make unexpected discoveries in the world around them. Each
half-hour episode follows a different group of middle school girls,
whose passion to find answers to their questions and eagerness to
understand their world provides an energetic model of inquiry-based
science, appealing to tweens, parents and educators alike. The show
invites viewers to go on to the Web site, a safe social networking
environment where girls connect, create personal profiles and avatars,
share projects and watch the episodes. NGCP has been involved from
creation to dissemination and we invite you to share in our goal - to
change how millions of girls think about science, technology,
engineering, and math! Every girl can be a SciGirl!
Design
Squad
The Design Squad Web site is the online companion to
the television series airing on PBS Kids. The site targets kids ages 8
and older, and features a mixture of magazine-style articles,
interactive features and downloadable content that can be used away from
the computer.
Like the show,
the goal of the Web site is to give kids a stronger understanding of
the connection between engineering and the things we all use in everyday
life.
Florida
Space Grant Consortium
Maintaining Florida's leadership in
the space industry The Florida Space Grant Consortium (FSGC)
was formed in 1989, when NASA implemented the national Space Grant
College and Fellowship Program. It is a voluntary association of
seventeen public and private Florida Universities and colleges. The
Consortium also includes all of Florida's community colleges, as well as
the Astronaut Memorial Foundation, Space Florida, Higher Education
Consortium for Science and Mathematics, Kennedy Space Center, and
Orlando Science Center. FSGC supports the expansion and diversification
of Florida's space industry, through providing grants, scholarships, and
fellowships to students and educators from Florida's public and private
institutes of higher education.
FSGC is administered by the
University of Central Florida through the Florida Space Institute at the
Kennedy Space Center.
