Michael Smith

Michael SmithDr. Michael Smith is the Deputy Executive Director, Internal Operations at the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science (GEM). The National GEM Consortium works to increase the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master's and doctoral levels in engineering and science.

Previously, Dr. Smith was the director of the World Headquarters Programs Team at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and has held a number of positions within the NSBE membership, including the position of national treasurer (1995–1997) and the Chairman of the 1999 National Convention Planning Committee.

Prior to NSBE, Dr. Smith worked as a program coordinator and instructor at the University of Missouri-Rolla and Texas A&M University. He built his technical expertise at such well-known companies as DuPont, Phillips Petroleum, and Amoco. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in chemical engineering from University of Missouri-Rolla and an engineering doctorate in chemical engineering and engineering management from Texas A&M University.
